Hydrogen Fuel For Cars - Closer To Reality Than You May Think

With rising gas prices seeming like a fact of life, many people are looking for alternatives to power their cars and other vehicles rahter than using traditionally fossil based fuels. Indeed, highly funded organizations like the energy commission are looking into possibilities, as are the average person in the street that look at hydrogen vehicle conversion kits to install in their cars.

Hydrogen fuel cells look certain to provide a credible alternative to gasoline as a vehicle’s fuel source in the near future. Hydrogen for cars presents the prospect of developing new energy resource for vehicles and much more, but it will also improve how we travel overall.

The gallon of gasoline equivalent to hydrogen costs about half as much as gasoline but improves fuel economy by over two-thirds more. Hydrogen fuel can lead to a reduced engine running temperature, that can promote the reduction in emissions from the car and reduce the carbon footprint emitted.

The main stumbling block to producing hydrogen fueled vehicles on a mass scale is the lack of available hydrogen fuel. Or more pertinently, the infrastructure to deliver hydrogen fuel to the consumer. Possibly in the future refueling of hydrogen at home could happen, but at the present time it is out of reach of the average car owner.

If cars ran only on electricity that was generated on board via hydrogen fuel, we would see a new horizon in vehicle design. Car design would be freed up to some extent as the need to control a large combustion engine and the problems that go with it would be reduced.

For instance, the equipment needed for moving a car would much smaller. Some such limitations involve having to account for a heat-producing engine, as well as bulky floorboard configurations which are required for drive line equipment currently.

As many government and corporations in the pertroleum and car industries start to think about hydrogen as a serious alternative to gasoline, the look of vehicles will change dramatically. Certainly, hydrogen will become more accessible in the near future, as will the fueling station that will refuel a hydrogen gas powered car.

Environmentally friendlier and more cost effective fuel for our cars benefits both for the individual and the wider population. As the increase in gas prices sees no end in sight, the advancement in developing hydrogen fueling cars and the infrastructure to support them will continue at an increasingly faster pace.
